  1. Cleanliness: pigs are very clean animals.
  2. Pigs’ do not defecate at the feeding area.
  3. They don’t sweat because they don’t have sweat glands. So, they wallow in mud to keep themselves cool.
  4. Sense of smell: the sense of smell is 2000 times greater than that of humans.
  5. Intelligence: pigs are the smartest of all pets and domestic animals and even smarter than dogs.
  6. Pigs are very intelligent, investigative, adoptable social animals that learn quickly.
  7. The sound a pig makes can reach 115 decibles, which is 3 decibles more than the sound of supersonic airliner.

COMMON DISEASES OF PIGS

The diseases mentioned below are likely to occur more frequently and should b attended to a veterinarian if necessary.

  1. Anaemia: pale conjunctival mucus membranes and gums, rough skin, reduced disease resistance.
  2. Hypoglycemia: rough and stiff hair, swollen eyes. Mortality is high among new born piglets.
  3. Hog cholera: high temperature and nervous signs may appear.
  4. Brucellosis: females: abortions, retention of placenta, high fever, mastitis. Males: sterility, failure to breed.
  5. parasitic problems: weight loss, loss of appetite, rough hair coat, diarrhea or constipation. Less feed conversion ratio.

Maintain clean surroundings, pig sheds and take appropriate precautions while garbage feeding. Donot combine newly purchased pigs with old ones and by taking timely advice from veterinarian can prevent disease occurrence.
